The Mission of This Fundraiser:
To facilitate the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation's Mission of 'Helping the Sherpas Help Themselves,' this fundraising effort will go primarily toward providing scholarships for students who have shown exemplary performance in their studies and wish to further educate themselves to improve the quality of life for and their communities.
The History of The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation:
Over the last forty-plus years, The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation headed by William (Zeke) O'Connor and his daughter, President Karen O'Connor, have partnered with the Sherpa people of the Solu-Khumbu region of Nepal to improve the lives of those who live in the villages of the Himalayas.
Various projects have involved the construction of sixteen schools including two high schools, two regional hospitals serving thousands of Sherpa villagers from remote locations, reforestation of areas denuded by overharvesting of trees, infrastructure work (such as water pipe lines, electric services, bridge construction), and providing education through scholarship assistance to Sherpa students, who return with degrees in medicine, education, and conservation.
The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation doesn't just throw money at a situation. It works with the local people, letting the needs come from their mouths to our ears, and then once the funds are appropriated, the local population becomes a working partner, providing sweat equity so that in the end, they are invested in the success of the project's completion and future.
The Goal of This Fundraiser:
Currently, the average tuition for four years of undergraduate work in Nepalese universities is approximately $7,000. The goal of this fundraiser is to underwrite at least one full four-year scholarship to a university of the student's choice in Nepal, including books and supplies.
Funds given from donors for this scholarship would be administered by and made payable to The Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, and are eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. There is no minimum or maximum amount that can be donated. The awarding of such a scholarship to a qualified student would be based on 'The Mingma Norbu Scholarship' criteria.
